Simulacrum is a visual journal and expressionistic exploration of postmodern culture. Through the exploration of mediums and process I am trying to challenge my own perceptions and habits and create something that communicates emotively and sincerely. As Baron Storey explains, “It was not enough to participate in commonly held assumptions, whether about the self or the society in which one lives. Could one break through habits of thought and perception with practice? I thought so.” Perhaps through creative expression, people can begin to experience a reality that is not limited to the structure of language. Perhaps the act of creation can challenge the existential grip that social structure maintains on an individual. Perhaps the enigmatic space between expressive creation and audience interpretation can not only allow audience and artist to reach authentic communion but also subvert the simulacrum.
